Project implementation /

Applying 50/50 methodology

This is an important step in the project because we start taking action applying the 50/50 methodology developed and involving the education community in a common action to save energy. This activity covers two calendar years, from January to December 2010 and from January to December 2011. The first year is considered a pilot year, when the 50/50 project methodology is implemented and the energy audits as well as the teaching materials are developed and assessed.

During this first year pupils and teachers get to know the energy habits and characteristics of the school, test how
to work on an energy team and learn how to involve their school in a more sustainable use of energy. The actions and results obtained should be a reference point to improve the 50/50 implementation the following year.

To put into practice the 50/50 model it is necessary a strong role of the kids and the educational community as well as input of knowledge and motivation from outside.

It is a process that required different steps such as follows:

  • Establish an Energy Team
  • Starting to know the energy use in the school
  • Knowledge, awareness-rising and planning
  • Energy Tour in the school
  • Gathering data about energy at school
  • Develop and action plan
  • Disseminate the result to the public related with the school
  • Communicate measures that need small investment
  • Use and communicate the money the school gets for its efforts
