More information about the 50/50 Network

The 50/50 Network is an initiative of the Euronet 50/50 project, a European project co financed by the European Commission.

The EURONET 50/50 network comprises:
• The project members.
• The participating management bodies and town halls.
• The 55 educational centers taking part.
• Other European educational centers that have already applied the 50/50 methodology (and who will be invited to participate).
There are 55 schools involved in the project from 9 European countries.

The 50/50 network has two basic aims:
• On the one hand making people aware of the project and the methodology employed as an instrument for promoting energy-saving and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in educational centers.
• On the other hand, providing a platform for exchanging experiences among all the participating centers.

The 50/50 Network is based on the 50/50 scheme where schools can save energy mainly with behavioral changes, such as switching off lights and electronic devices when are not needed, and they get in return an economic incentive from the manager of the building (e.g. City Council). These incentives are a result of the 50% savings on the electricity bill achieved with the reductions on energy use made in the school. Everybody wins: the school becomes more sustainable, making a more responsible use of energy, and receives extra money for investing in their needs, while the manager of the building reduces the energy bill.

Students are the main actors of the 50/50 network, they are the ones who can make a change getting concerned and starting acting daily to save energy at school. However, teachers and other school staff as well as policy makers have also a direct and important role to play helping students and the school to move forward a more sustainable use of energy.

The 50/50 Network is open to all the schools and in general to educational centers around Europe that wish to get involved in a similar 50/50 scheme to have a more responsible use of resources (particularly energy).
