On Friday, May 14, pupils and teachers from the 13 schools in Barcelona province taking part in EURONET 50/50 attended a training session at the Penedés Intermunicipal Institute, where they learned how this energy saving project is applied. The session was addressed by Ferran Vallespinós, coordinator of the Environment Area at Barcelona Provincial Council, and Isidoro Rando, Barcelona City Councillor for the Environment.

The session gave the other participants in the project the chance to discover for themselves how the 50/50 project is applied at the Penedés Intermunicipal Institute, a pioneer in this initiative in Catalonia. The presentation covered such themes as the results obtained, investment made in energy saving and the difficulties and problems encountered. A report was also given on the current state of the EURONET project, and schools were given energy measurement kits containing the necessary instruments. The participants included teachers and pupils from the schools taking part in Euronet 50/50, and local authority technical personnel.

The main objective of EURONET 50/50, which involves 50 schools in 9 European countries, is to increase energy efficiency by promoting good practice in energy saving. Thirteen schools in Barcelona province are taking part in the project, promoted here by Barcelona Provincial Council through its Environment Area.

EURONET 50/50 is scheduled to run for three years, from 2009 to 2011. The budget assigned to the initiative is 1,049,678 euros, of which Barcelona Provincial Council manages 281,000 euros. The European Commission finances 75% of the project, the partners the remaining 25%.
